Description
The Surgical Scrub Technician is an essential member of the operating room team, responsible for assisting surgeons and other healthcare professionals during surgical procedures. Their primary duties include preparing the operating room, maintaining a sterile environment, and handling instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary for the surgery. This role requires technical expertise, attention to detail, and a commitment to patient safety.
Responsibilities/ Requirements
Key Responsibilities:
1. Preoperative Duties:
- Review the operation schedule and prepare for upcoming procedures.
- Assist in setting up the operating room with sterile drapes, instruments, and equipment.
- Ensure all necessary surgical instruments, materials, and equipment are properly sterilized and readily available.
2. Intraoperative Duties:
- Maintain a sterile field throughout the surgery, ensuring that all instruments and supplies remain uncontaminated.
- Anticipate the surgeonβs needs by handing sterile instruments, supplies, and equipment to the surgeon.
- Monitor the sterile environment and promptly respond to any breaks in sterility.
- Keep an accurate count of sponges, needles, and instruments used during surgery to ensure patient safety.
3. Postoperative Duties:
- Clean, organize, and prepare instruments for sterilization and ensure that all reusable equipment is properly decontaminated.
- Restock the operating room with necessary supplies and equipment for subsequent surgeries.
Skills & Abilities:
- Strong understanding of surgical procedures, aseptic techniques, and infection control measures.
- Exceptional attention to detail with the ability to work quickly and efficiently in high-pressure environments.
- Effective communication and collaboration skills to interact with surgeons, nurses, and the healthcare team.
- Physical stamina to stand for long periods, assist in physically demanding tasks, and respond to the fast-paced demands of surgery.
Qualifications:
Education:
- A minimum of 5 CXC/CSEC passes or equivalent including English.
- Diploma or certification from an accredited Surgical Technologist program.
Experience:
- Prior experience as a Surgical Scrub Technician preferred, but not required. On-the-job training will be provided if necessary.
Certifications:
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
Working Conditions:
- The role involves exposure to blood, bodily fluids, and potential infectious diseases.
- Requires the ability to stand for extended periods, work in a fast-paced environment, and handle physically demanding tasks.
- Shift work, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, may be required depending on surgical schedules.
