Description
The Neurology Consultant Physician is responsible for overseeing the clinical and administrative operations of the Neurology Department at Mount St. John’s Medical Centre (MSJMC). This role ensures the delivery of high-quality neurological care through the diagnosis, treatment, and management of disorders affecting the nervous system. The incumbent will lead a multidisciplinary team in providing inpatient, outpatient, and emergency neurology services while adhering to established protocols and standards of care. Additionally, the Lead Neurologist will contribute to the development of neurology services, support medical education initiatives, and ensure continuous quality improvement within the department.
Responsibilities/ Requirements
GENERAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- The Consultant Physician is responsible for the provision of proper and efficient medical care to all patients admitted, electively or as an emergency, to his/her firm/unit as an inpatient or referred to him/her in the outpatient clinic of Mount St John’s Medical Centre (MSJMC).
- In pursuit of the above he/she is expected to initiate diagnostic, therapeutic and investigative procedures after appropriate appraisal either on ward-rounds or otherwise.
- The Consultant Physician is expected to take part fully whether clinically and/or administratively, in the development of the services proved by the department for patients of MSJMC.
- The Consultant Physician is, in a general way, expected to share the workload equally with his/her Consultant colleagues in the department, under the general direction of the head of the department. Every opportunity will be given where possible for Consultant Physician to pursue their professional interest in subspecialties.
- The Consultant Physician is encouraged to participate in the teaching of Medical Students and Post Graduate doctors attached to the department.
- Provision is made for, and appropriate facilities are available to Consultants to provide private medical care to both in and outpatients of MSJMC.
SPECIFIC JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES – LEAD NEUROLOGIST
- Lead the clinical & administrative neurology team based on established neurology protocols & standard operating procedures for inpatient, outpatient & emergency services.
- Perform neurological examination of patients who are suffering from neurological disorders.
- Order diagnostic tests and utilize CT scan, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) & electroencephalogram (EEG).
- Diagnose and treat disorders in the nervous system subject to specialized training in treating brain diseases and spinal cord diseases and disorders as well as maladies of the nerves and muscles.
- Develop treatment plans, and manage and adapt treatment of patients depending on progress.
- Communicate with nurses and other medical staff to ensure patients receive best possible care.
- Communicate treatment plans and home care instructions to patients.
- Maintain current knowledge of trends in area of expertise.
- Provide department report on all administrative and clinical matters that ensure quality patient care.
- Coordinate orientation, training and development resources for neurology team
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge and Skills Requirements:
A neurologist should possess a genuine empathic personality, strong communication skills, ability to withstand pressure at work and perform various types of work at the same time. The neurologist must be aware of various insurance programs and plans to guide patients to the best approach for treatment.
- A Doctorate of Medicine Degree as well as maintaining license.
- Must currently hold a license to practice Medicine in Antigua & Barbuda as a Specialist without restrictions.
- Must hold Consultant status under MSJMC’s Medical Staff Bylaws.
Working Conditions:
- The neurologist often works in a well-lit and pleasant environment. As a rule, neurologists usually work 40 hours a week.
- Support team of physicians, nurses, ancillary healthcare professionals in addition to requisite equipment and supplies required to meet service objectives and organizational goals.
