Description
The Laboratory Technician Performs laboratory tests which may include various assays, specialized techniques such as electrophoresis following established procedures or protocols.

Duties and responsibilities
- Prepares specimens for processing
- Operates requisite laboratory equipment and instruments; records data; maintains and makes minor adjustments to equipment.
- Uses Standard safety precautions to protect self and co-workers from bio-hazardous materials, including blood-borne pathogens.
- Complies with biohazard safety standards through proper handling of potentially hazardous chemical and biological agents in the workplace.
- Performs duties of the receptionist as is needed.
- Monitors inventory levels, orders materials and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures
- Rotate through all laboratory departments.
- Participate in specimen collection when required according to test requested, either directly by venipuncture or skin puncture; maintain responsibility for patient identification, specimen labeling and collection verification, or instructing patients or other healthcare providers in collection and preservation techniques for urine, sputum, stool, scrapings, autologous /directed donations, or other specimens for analysis.
- Perform the duties of a phlebotomist.
- Any other job-related duties assigned by Departmental head or designate.
Duties and Responsibilities of the Phlebotomist
- Practice proper patient identification
- Draw blood from patients in the correct order using the proper tubes.
- Label vials with patient names and dates
- Decipher the best method for drawing blood depending on the specific patient
- Transport all specimen samples to the departments
- Centrifuge, aliquot, and store blood samples appropriately
- Expect to work with a large number of patients varying in age and health status
- Be friendly, courteous and sympathetic when it comes to working with patients
- Keep your phlebotomy station well-organized at all times and secure the supplies at the end of your shift.

Education:
Experience: None required. On-the-job training will be provided.
Hours of work:
- The shift system operates Monday - Friday
- Times: 7am – 3pm, 11am – 7pm, 8am – 4pm
- Any other shift as required by laboratory manager.
